それ
それ
that
Talk about “that” without repeating its name
それ (sore) means “that.” Use it for a thing near the person you are speaking to, or something already mentioned in the conversation. It stands in place of the thing’s name.
- Use “that” on its own
- それ (それ) · sore
それ can be followed by a particle: それは introduces the thing as the topic, and それを marks it as the thing you want or do something to. それをください means “Please give me that.”
- Say “that” before a noun
- その本 (そのほん) · sono hon
Use その (sono) directly before the thing’s name. その本 means “that book.” Use それ when you leave out 本; use その本 when you name the book.
これ (kore) is “this,” near the speaker. それ is “that,” near the listener. それから (sorekara) is a different expression meaning “then” or “after that”; it connects events in a sequence.
