Sources & licences
Some dictionary facts and kanji study bands in our public guides draw on the resources below. We select and present this information alongside our own learner explanations and examples.
Dictionary facts
Word and kanji facts are derived in part from the Electronic Dictionary Research and Development Group’s (EDRDG) JMdict and KANJIDIC2. These files are available under CC BY-SA 4.0. We select, simplify and reformat facts for our study guides. See the EDRDG dictionary licence for the source terms.
Kanji study bands
N5 study-band classifications draw on Jonathan Waller’s JLPT resources (see the CC BY sharing terms), accessed through the kanji-data project. The Jōyō selection uses the Japanese Language Data project (CC BY-SA 4.0); see its attribution details.
JLPT labels here are learner-oriented study bands, not an official fixed list of kanji or vocabulary for the exam.
Kanji stroke order
Stroke-order diagrams are safety-filtered static derivatives of the normal, nonvariant KanjiVG release r20250816. KanjiVG is copyright Ulrich Apel and contributors and is available under CC BY-SA 3.0 Unported. Visit the KanjiVG project for the original source.
